Either R/Rt for splinter barrage (as mentioned above), R/Mo for the hard res or for a couple of running builds, R/E for conjure barrage, R/W for bunny thumper, or possibly R/N for touch ranger (though not all that effective, but whatever makes you happy). Or you could do R/D for some running builds.

Note that you can change your secondary later.

Pre-Sear starter skills :

Energy Tap
Ether Feast
Read The Wind
Powershot
Dual Shot
Ignite Arrows
Charm Animal
comfort Animal / Phantasm (from illusion)

Post-Searing :

Hunter's Shot
Penetrating Attack
Read The Wind
Practiced Stance (elite)
Troll Ungeunt/ Healing Spring
Power Drain
Spirit of Failure/ Revive Animal (if no monk henchman)
Charm Animal

Flatbow/Short bow (personal preference)

Basic Strategy : In an attempt to keep yourself suitable for combat for lengthy periods of time, use Practiced Stance , Read the Wind, then alternate as needed/required between hunter's Shot, and Penetrating attack, throwing in a quick Power Drain, for an energy steal or Spirit of Failure for a similar steal against melee opponents. If you need a heal you have your preference of choice between Troll Ungeunt or Healing Spring.
There are no points in Beast mastery in this one but is run with a pet as a gimp target focus off of yourself.
This is a build I have been running in PvE quite successfully. Very rarely (2 times total) has this one failed me in explorations.
If coming upon instances where a party is needed requiring the use of henchmen, then I usually add a ranger, monk, and warrior to round out the 4 member party for missions. With the monk henchman(woman actually) providing the bulk of any extra healing required in detrimental situations.

A PvE Solo similar class Ranger/Monk might be a variation of this one to be included as well.

Well this one sounds good. Is it?
And what is
Post Searing + Pre-Sear?

Pre Searing is the tutorial area of Prophecies, Post Searing is when the game starts proper.

In Prophecies, it ends when Sir Tydus says, 'are you ready. You can't go back if you are.' There is like red warning writing in this words. Once you press Okay, I'm ready. Off you go, from Pre-Searing to the "real" world.

I'm serious when I say this - any secondary will work with a Ranger.

Ranger/Warrior: Pretty much a stance tank, and Expertise helps with the energy cost on some attacks.
Ranger/Monk: Your standard bread-and-butter Ranger. Beastmaster/Trapper/Running/Bow Attacks will work.
Ranger/Ele: Conjure/Barrage
Ranger/Mesmer: Hardcore interrupts, or BHA+Epidemic.
Ranger/Necro: Mostly a pvp build - Touch Ranger or Virulence spreader
Ranger/Assassin: Expertise works wonders with dagger attacks.
Ranger/Dervish: There's a particular R/D build with a pet and a scythe, I don't know what it is, though. There's also Ebon Dust Aura with an earth bow, or a Grenth's Grasp with icy bow...
Ranger/Paragon: Packhunter. Ranger with a pet and spear attacks.

Nicely made and descriptive. Few points I'd like to add.

R/W: Most common stances are whirling and lightning for this build.
R/Mo: Most popular due to addition of Mending Touch. Usually used with interrupts, a stance, and either Burning Arrow, Magebane Arrow, Crippling Shot, or Broad Head Arrow.
R/N: I do see some packing Gaze of Contempt or Rend Enchantments
R/A: Underrated IMO. Great builds can be made from this class in certain situations and overlooked thanks to Standard R/Mo BA, which is already well-established.

The ones you got from Davion don't look so good to me - except possibly for a character during development.

Most secondaries go well, each can add their own specialties.

My additional favorites:

R/Me - Epidemic, Frustration/Arc.Conundrum, Echo, Mantra's
R/W - Choking gas + Flurry

That build sucks, please don't use it. (MAYBE the pre one, it doesn't really matter there.)

Also, /me interupts are a bad idea to use... just stick with the mantras (very specialized builds though) and epidemic for BHA is pve.

ok well I chose mesmer as my secondary class, to see if i like it, and I'm not sure i do. i don't see anything great coming from it. the only mesmer skill i use is Ether Feast, but rarely since it doesn't do much to me.

I want to be a solo Ranger. I hate having the heroes around. they are always messing things up. Plus I've always liked to fight alone. Unless I want to party up with friends and do stuff.
So if i can get a better secondary class i will start over since I'm not that far.
But another thing I've noticed is that even with a monk on my side, i cant beat the damn Boss guys, the ones with a color around them. I can stay alive, but i cant kill them, they always use that damn healing signet. I try all kinds of skill combinations and still nothing.
Is that normal? Or will i have to have a party to beat those.

There are a few places you can do solo, but I doubt going solo will get you through the game/story. The heroes are ok, once you learn how to control them. And bring Distracting Shot and Savage Shot to interrupt healing signet.

The better secondary for Ranger would probably be /Mo for the hard like rebirth in high lvl areas otherwise that any other will do.Mine started off as a R/N I mostly used parsited bond and some wells and you can use plague touch.

Going through the game will be very difficult, if not impossible alone.

Beating bosses can be difficult even with a party. There are farming builds that can kill bosses 1v1, but I'm assuming you're not using one.

Yes, GW is a cooperative game, don't expect to get far without NPCs or real life people.

ok, well im fine with not doing solo. I just saw alot of videos and threads on solo so i just assumed it was possible.

But Is it possible to finish the prophecies campaign w/o any extra quests to lvl you up?
Basically just doing each mission one after another.

Not doing the other, extra quests.

Yes it is possible don't forget to do the skill quests and if you want you can skip some of the missions but if this is your first char I would suggest not.
